Selena S. Butler Park

This half-century-old Old Fourth Ward park has seen some rough times — falling into disrepair after many of its users were driven away by housing demolition, being hit and mostly destroyed by the tornado of 2008, and becoming a hub for crime, drugs, and prostitution in the late 2000s. Fortunately, the rundown, rarely used eyesore was given a $1.6 million renovation in 2011 and is now a beloved, well-maintained hub for the neighborhood, complete with fitness station.

Location: 98 William Holmes Borders Sr. Drive (just a couple of blocks from Edgewood Avenue)

Workout equipment: While the park has less fitness equipment than it initially did after its renovation, it still offers enough for a good workout. Head there for:

  • Pull-ups/chin-ups
  • Sit-ups
  • Back extensions
  • Dips
  • Push-ups
  • Jumping over the s-shaped bar
  • Balance work

Then run a few laps on the 1/8 mile track.

Other amenities: Basketball court, two tennis courts, playground, 1/8 mile lap track, ping pong table.
